It’s possible that California might look, to the disinterested observer, like my favourite part of the United States – given that I’ve been there three times. Actually, it’s more to do with the fact that my last two trips to the USA have been plotted in relation to Classics Conferences and the fact that California in January (which is when the big American Classics conference takes place) is more appealing than, say, Philadelphia or Chicago in January. So I’ve been to the California conferences and stayed for a holiday, since I refuse to fly transatlantic at my own expense for less than a two week stay. That said, I do love the California scenery – the deserts and the coastline. There’s a Wanderlust Magazine question which asks, “Are you jungle, mountain, desert or ocean.” Well, I can’t decide between the last two. And California has both.
